Paramount buys Warner Bros Discovery

Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery

Monday 10 August 2026

Paramount has outbid Netflix by offering £82bn ($111bn) to buy Warner Bros Discovery, which was approved by shareholders but has created some negative waves within the entertainment and business sectors.

The Netflix management have been very critical of Paramount Skydance offer by doubling Netflix's £49bn ($66bn) offer for Warner Bros Discovery, which is being seen as wildly over the top, and not making any business sense in a very challenging sector.

Paramount have hit back and stated sour grapes from the Netflix camp and say that their groundbreaking offer is what will secure the deal from them.

Paramount owns popular channels from children’s network Nickelodeon, CBS and Comedy Central plus many more channels and programmes, with an increased offer of Warner Bros Discovery will scoop the whole entity which includes the best and popular films such as Harry Porter through Warner Bros Discovery HBO Max streaming catalogue and service, the most popular news channel in the United States CNN, the Food Network and sports channels which are up for grabs.

The real controversy of this deal is from Paramount’s owner’s billionaire father and son Larry and David Ellison, who are major donors and rooted to the Republican Party in the United States and friends with President Trump, who will be in charge of CNN news channel which is more Democratic and is opposed to President Trump.

There has been opposition from actors and staff currently working within the Warner Bros Discovery Group who are worried about job cuts and instability that this deal could cost in the future.

Protests are planned and Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo has led one that was organised outside of the offices of Warner Bros Discovery in Hollywood, as well as a letter signed by 1,400 people including leading actors in the films Warner Bros have produced also taking an opposing stand on this deal with Paramount Skydance.

Larry Ellison's vision is to increase the dominance of Paramount Skydance within Hollywood and across the creative hubs within the United States.

The deal has to be approved by regulators not just in the United States where it is expected to go through though there is opposition on the Democrats side with Senator Elizabeth Warren publicly voicing concerns but in Europe where the latter will have a more challenge trying to convince the regulators it will not disadvantage consumers choice of entertainment whilst maintaining competitive subscription costs, and not lead to mass job losses and a lack of opportunity for actors, directors, screenwriters and the plethora of backroom creative jobs.

The most likely outcome will be a compromise where Warner Bros Discovery and Paramount Skydance will have to offload various channels and companies to satisfy any anti-trust or monopoly issues on both sides of the pond.
